Some women wonder why they need to see an Ob/Gyn once they are done having children or if they don’t plan on becoming pregnant. There are many benefits to having an annual gynecologic exam at any age. So, what exactly happens at this appointment?

You will see one of our providers who will perform:
-A comprehensive medical history
-A review of your family history to determine if you are at high risk for any medical or gynecologic conditions
-Cancer screening (for example: pap smear, mammogram, colonoscopy, and DEXA scans to screen for osteoporosis). A Pap test screens for cervical cancer and it is recommended that women have pap screening until at least age 65.
-Recommendations for preventative healthcare (for example: blood testing for thyroid problems, diabetes, or cholesterol)
-Diagnosis and treatment for medical and gynecologic conditions
-A physical exam (which may include a breast and/or pelvic exam)

We also take the opportunity to discuss contraception and your reproductive life plan. Our providers offer all forms of contraception (including nexplanon, IUDs, and surgical permanent birth control with a tubal ligation). This may also include pre-conceptual counseling and initial infertility assessment. If you wish to discuss infertility, then we will have you schedule a second appointment to discuss becoming pregnant in more detail.

We each consider ourselves lucky that we are in a medical specialty where we take care of patients throughout their lives rather than for a brief period of time. As Ob/Gyn providers we contribute to the overall health of women throughout their lifespan.

We are accepting new patients! To schedule an appointment with OBGYN Associates, call us at 515-288-3287.
