What is Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping?
Delayed umbilical cord clamping is the practice of waiting 30 to 60 seconds before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord after birth. During this first minute of life, a baby is continuing to receive blood from the placenta – up to 80 to 100 mL!
What is the benefit of Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping?
Delayed cord clamping not only helps improve iron levels immediately after birth, the effects are long lasting. Babies who had delayed cord clamping are less likely to have iron deficiency within their entire first year of life. Iron is important in many aspects of infant growth and development.
Will I be offered Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping?
Yes! The physicians at OB/GYN Associates are all well aware of these benefits. Delayed cord clamping for 60 seconds is standard practice after a vaginal delivery. During this first minute of life, the baby is placed on mom’s chest to be dried off and assessed by nursing staff. After 1 minute, the cord is clamped and able to be cut by the family.
There are certain circumstances where delayed cord clamping cannot be safely performed. In the case of a c-section, the cord is typically cut after about 30 seconds.
